Congressional Research Service summary

Domestic Uranium Saves America Act or the Domestic USA Act

This bill includes uranium on the critical minerals list. In 2018, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) published a list of critical minerals, including uranium, in response to an executive order that called for a federal strategy to ensure secure and reliable supplies of critical minerals. The USGS updates the list every three years and includes certain minerals that are essential to economic or national security and have a supply chain vulnerable to disruption. In 2022, USGS removed uranium from the list. The bill reinstates uranium as a critical mineral.

Key Points
Main provisions of the bill
The bill requires the U.S. government to list uranium as a critical mineral.
Critical minerals are essential for the economy and national security, but have vulnerable supply chains.
Uranium is used in nuclear power plants to generate electricity.
Listing uranium as a critical mineral means the government must monitor its supply and take steps to ensure a reliable source.
This could impact the nuclear power industry and electricity prices for consumers.
How This Impacts Americans
Potential effects on citizens and communities
If this bill becomes law, it would impact the nuclear power industry and potentially electricity prices for consumers. By listing uranium as a critical mineral, the government would have to take steps to ensure a reliable supply, which could affect nuclear power plant operations and costs. This could then be passed on to electricity bills for homes and businesses that rely on nuclear power.
