Key Points
Main provisions of the bill
Creates a new Office of Seafood Policy and Program Integration within USDA to coordinate seafood policies and activities
Establishes requirements for labeling seafood as 'wild USA' or 'wild American'
Expands country-of-origin labeling requirements to include more seafood products
Includes commercial fishing in the definition of farming for certain USDA farm loans
Requires schools to get a waiver to purchase foreign seafood for the National School Lunch Program
How This Impacts Americans
Potential effects on citizens and communities
This bill would directly impact the domestic seafood industry, including commercial fishermen, seafood processors, and retailers. It aims to boost demand for U.S.-caught and -farmed seafood by setting labeling standards and expanding marketing requirements. Schools and families who participate in the National School Lunch Program would also be affected, as the bill makes it harder for them to purchase foreign seafood.
